Well, Jeff and Pat, Gavin Newsom was elected in twenty eighteen to a four year term, but now he could be voted out of office in just a few months. The secretary of state’s office says this afternoon the anti Newsom campaign has enough valid signatures now to force a recall election. And that election will likely happen this fall. And voters will be asked two questions. Should Governor Newsom be recalled? And if yes, who should replace him? The votes on his replacement will be counted only if a majority of voters answer yes to the recall question.
Three Republicans have already announced they are running. They include John Cox, a Cox, you may recall, lost to new some in the twenty eighteen governor’s race. Also in the running, Kevin Faulconer, the former mayor of San Diego, and Caitlyn Jenner, the Olympic gold medalist and reality TV star, joined the race last week. Governor Newsom just reacted on Twitter, writing, This Republican recall threatens our values and seeks to undo the important progress we’ve made from fighting covid to helping struggling families, protecting our environment and passing common sense gun violence solutions.
There is too much at stake. The last California, governor to be recalled was Gray Davis. He was replaced by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in two thousand and three.
