Live Update: NBA players won’t be subject to random marijuana tests in 2021-22

The NBA won’t subject players to random marijuana tests during the 2021-22 season, the league revealed on Wednesday.

“We have agreed with the NBPA to extend the suspension of random testing for marijuana for the 2021-22 season and focus our random testing program on performance-enhancing products and drugs of abuse,” NBA spokesman Mike Bass said (via Tim Reynolds of The Associated Press).

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski first broke the news.

The NBA first adjusted the policy during the 2019-20 season restart, which featured 22 of the 30 teams entering the Walt Disney World Resort “bubble” in Orlando, Fla., to complete the season after the league suspended play because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The NBA then announced prior to the 2020-21 season that it would not conduct randomized testing for marijuana, once again to focus the random testing program on “performance-enhancing products and drugs of abuse.”

Ahead of the 2021-22 season, teams gathered in their local markets on Sept. 27 for media day, with training camp beginning the following day.

The NBA’s 75th anniversary season will open on Oct. 19 with a pair of star-studded matchups (Nets vs. Bucks and Warriors vs. Lakers). Every team will play an 82-game schedule in 2021-22 after playing 72 games last season.
