German Navy, Eyes on China, Adds to Europe’s Pacific Presence

TOKYO—The German navy’s flagship will join exercises with the U.S. and its allies in the western Pacific, a modest but symbolic broadening of an alliance of democracies countering China’s growing maritime power.

The Bayern, a frigate that recently visited Australia and Guam, docked in Tokyo on Friday. The ship held exercises with the Japanese navy this week and will join the U.S., Japanese and other allied navies to build interoperability skills from Nov. 20 to Nov. 30, according to German officials.
