Sam Kerr strikes twice in Chelsea’s Champions League thrashing of Servette

Sam Kerr bagged a double in a ruthless 7-0 victory for Chelsea against Swiss champions Servette in the Women’s Champions League on Wednesday (AEDT).

The Matildas star, who had been rested from the side’s Women’s Super League victory over Aston Villa on Sunday, also set up two goals as the Blues raced to a six-goal lead by half-time. Kerr scored Chelsea’s third and fourth goals, with England striker Fran Kirby (2), Melanie Leupolz, Jessie Fleming and Guro Reiten also on the scoresheet in Switzerland.

“The details in the pass, the movement, the finishes and execution in the actions… It could have been 7-0 at half-time. We missed chances!” Chelsea manager Emma Hayes said.

“Credit to the players. They decided they wanted to go up a level. It is my job to put the challenge to them. I thought we were outstanding.”

Leupolz began the rout with a left-foot strike before Kerr and Kirby added their doubles. Kerr’s goals came within two minutes of each other midway through the first half.

The Australian was substituted after 66 minutes as Chelsea rested a host of their top players.

The Blues, last season’s runners-up, lead Group A after winning two of their three games so far.
